Menceritakan kisah Jamal Malik, yatim piatu berusia 18 tahun dari tempat kumuh di Mumbai, yang hampir memenangkan hadiah 20 juta Rupee dalam acara Who Wants to be a Millionaire versi India. Jamal lantas ditangkap polisi karena kecurigaan bahwa ia curang. Bagaimana mungkin seorang anak jalanan bisa tahu demikian banyak hingga bisa menjawab berbagai pertanyaan dalam acara kuis yang terkenal tersebut? Jamal akhirnya menceritakan tentang hidupnya di jalanan, dan berbagai kejadian yang membuatnya bisa menjawab pertanyaan yang sulit dalam acara kuis tersebut. Tetapi alasan sesungguhnya kenapa Jamal sampai ikut acara kuis tersebut baru akan terjawab setelah Jamal menghadapi pertanyaan penentuan, sebuah klimaks yang menegangkan bagi 60 juta penonton acara kuis tersebut, polisi yang hendak menangkap Jamal, dan juga penonton film ini.

Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" But when the show breaks for the night, a police inspector arrests him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells his life story in the slum where he grew up, of adventures on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he's loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals how he learned the answers to the show's seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains a mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches really doing on the game show? When Jamal returns to answer the final question, the inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out.
